Suffolk
Brindles
This garden is on the coast of Suffolk and has typical old heathland sandy soil. The garden has been planted with
species able to cope with the extreme dry conditions of its situation - an old crag-pit. The plants vary from low
hummocks of Thrift, through herbs, late-flowering perennials to the main planting which is a stylised version
of the Suffolk heathland. The large plants of Tamarix, Birch and grasses prevent the viewer seeing the whole garden
and encourage people to walk among the plants.
The Grange
I built this garden about 6 years ago. The aim was to create a garden
that has year-round interest with a good underlying structure.
Since then, the main border planting has been
added to and plants moved to improve the effect.
Bulcamp Cottage
This small garden is on the edge of an estuary and is very exposed.
It has a beautiful natural feel to it. The plants
have all been chosen to grow in the extremely sharply-drained, poor soil
and windy conditions.
Stanley House
The brief for this garden was to create
a screen to hide a neighbour's roof and caravan.
A line of formally pleached Crab Apple's provide interest all year.
The tops of the supporting posts were finished with
an onion-shaped finial, and the whole painted black to match the
outbuildings of the property.
